Letter of admittance, letters to family and grade reports from Annapolis. He tells of his life, studies and difficulties at the Naval Academy. Three letters from Owen Lovejoy regarding his efforts toward reinstatement and two letters from the Academy. Letters from the war mainly discuss camp life and activities. Mentions General Curtis several times and gives his opinion of him. Is fighting only for preservation of the union and states he hates "abolitionists as much as he hates the secesh". Letter from Captain Blanchard to Marsh family giving a description of the battle where Marsh was wounded. One letter from the hospital after he was wounded tells family of the battle. Letter regarding payment to family by military.

Came to Princeton, Illinois in 1838 as minister of the Congregational Church and strong abolitionist. His home there was a stop on the Underground Railroad. He was elected to the state legislature in 1854 and to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1856, where he served five terms. He was the brother of slain abolitionist, Elijah Lovejoy. From Joliet, Ill. attended Annapolis and served in the 13th Illinois Infantry, Company K, during the Civil War. He spent only four months at Annapolis before being allowed to resign. Owen Lovejoy attempted to get him reinstated but was unsuccessful. During the war he served under General Curtis, whom he did not like. He did like Captain Blanchard who commanded of Company K.
