Came to Princeton, Illinois in 1838 as minister of the Congregational Church and strong abolitionist. His home there was a stop on the Underground Railroad. He was elected to the state legislature in 1854 and to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1856, where he served five terms. He was the brother of slain abolitionist, Elijah Lovejoy. From Joliet, Ill. attended Annapolis and served in the 13th Illinois Infantry, Company K, during the Civil War. He spent only four months at Annapolis before being allowed to resign. Owen Lovejoy attempted to get him reinstated but was unsuccessful. During the war he served under General Curtis, whom he did not like. He did like Captain Blanchard who commanded of Company K. He was wounded December 1862 during battle at Auburn, Mississippi near Vicksburg and died in 1863. From the des...
